Alpine is the largest town in Brewster county, and growing. The current population is around 6,000. There is ranching, tourism and Sul Ross State University.

Alpine is a fairly tranquil town, situated at an altitude of around 4400 feet at the base of the Davis Mountains. It is 205 miles west of Del Rio, 80 miles north of Terlingua, 220 miles from El Paso and 65 miles from the nearest Wal-Mart.
There are a lot of gas stations, numerous fast food restaurants and a few real restaurants. There are enough motels. There is a movie theater, which is open most years.
The museum of the Big Bend is located at Sul Ross, as are the offices of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute (CDRI). The main operation of CDRI is located about twenty miles north on Hwy. 118.
Alpine is a nice town in which to relax and get away from it all.
